Gov Otu urges sacrifice, unity at Cross River Armed Forces Remembrance Service

As Cross River commemorates the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day with an inter-denominational service, Governor Prince Bassey Otu has called on citizens and Nigerians as a whole to uphold the principles of sacrifice, service, and unity.

Speaking at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Navy Barracks, Akim in Calabar Municipality, where the event took place, Otu emphasised the importance of supporting veterans so their sacrifices are recognised beyond their time in active duty.

Represented by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, the governor highlighted that veterans’ families deserve consistent respect and care for their enduring contributions to the nation.

“As we honour the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, we are reminded of the sacrifices made by our courageous service members for our country’s peace and unity.

“We pay tribute to both past and present heroes, including those who fought during the Nigerian Civil War, the two World Wars, and those presently engaged in combating insurgency, such as Boko Haram. Their sacrifices were vital in safeguarding our sovereignty and preserving peace,” Otu stated.

The governor urged Cross Riverians to embody harmony and progress in tribute to the Armed Forces’ efforts towards creating a just and peaceful future.

Earlier, Rev. Fr. Raphael Adelana, the officiating priest, addressed the congregation on “How to Truly Honour Our Fallen Heroes,” stressing the importance of the military working to prevent unnecessary conflicts.

He remarked, “We must adopt a more proactive approach to conflict prevention, making deliberate efforts to avoid wars that result in the loss of lives.” Adelana pointed out that societal issues such as violence, substance abuse, greed, and corruption are rampant, highlighting the need for peace for national prosperity.

During the service, the deputy governor led the first reading, while the State Assembly speaker, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, presented the second. The ceremony also included intercessory prayers, musical performances by the Nigerian Navy Catholic Women, and a special thanksgiving led by the deputy governor alongside service commanders and veterans.
