The Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has officially approved the mobilisation of resources to enhance healthcare delivery, restore services at public health facilities, and improve working conditions for medical staff, especially in rural areas of the state.
The directive comes in response to the recent tragic death of a pregnant woman at Obanliku General Hospital. The state government described this incident as “unavoidable.”
The Commissioner of Health extended sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and the people of Obanliku Local Government Area.
The government has pledged to provide and support services at the General Hospital to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, addressed journalists regarding the governor’s directive.
He explained that the ministry had promptly established a committee to implement this intervention and align it with the current administration’s policy focus on the health sector.
The committee includes the heads of relevant departments and units within the Ministry, as well as parastatals in the health sector.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Pauline Obute, serves as the Chairman, with his counterpart from the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency as the alternate Chairman.
The commissioner also noted that the first meeting of the committee will be held on Monday to expedite the implementation of the Governor’s directives aimed at revitalising the health sector, which has faced challenges in recent years.
Emphasising the administration’s commitment to the health of its citizens, Ayuk stated that the “People First” agenda in the health sector aims to ensure that no one lacks healthcare or loses their life due to a lack of medical services in Cross River State.
The Commissioner called for patience as the Otu-led administration works diligently to enhance the availability of health services for all residents of the state.
