Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the state’s request to take over and convert the newly reconstructed General Hospital Kumo into a Federal Medical Centre (FMC).
Reacting to the development, Governor Yahaya emphasized that the Federal Government’s takeover of the state-of-the-art medical facility would significantly enhance healthcare delivery in Gombe State and the broader Northeast subregion.
The Governor noted that the upgraded facility would serve as a teaching hospital for the Federal University of Kashere and Lincoln University, Kumo. He expressed optimism that medical students trained at these institutions would contribute to strengthening the state’s healthcare workforce upon graduation.
Reiterating his administration’s commitment to providing quality and affordable healthcare, Governor Yahaya highlighted several ongoing initiatives, including:
- The remodelling of the specialist hospital in Gombe.
- Upgrading general hospitals in Bajoga and Kaltungo.
- Constructing a brand-new general hospital in Kumo.
- Revitalizing 114 Primary Healthcare Centres across the state.
Expressing his delight over the approval, the Governor said:
“I am excited about the approval by our dear President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the takeover and conversion of the General Hospital Kumo to a Federal Medical Centre. This development will no doubt enhance the delivery of quality healthcare services to our people in Gombe State and neighboring states.”
He further noted:
“Upon completing the reconstruction and equipping of the Kumo Hospital—a 200-bed ultramodern facility designed to provide comprehensive healthcare services—we requested its takeover by the Federal Government. This became necessary as the former FMC in Gombe had been upgraded to a Federal Teaching Hospital. Today, Mr. President has graciously approved our request.”
Governor Yahaya also acknowledged the support of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Mohammed Ali Pate, for facilitating the process.
The Presidency, while announcing President Tinubu’s approval for the hospital’s conversion, praised Governor Yahaya’s dedication to improving healthcare in the state.
“The Federal Government recognizes the state’s commitment to improving its health sector in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda, which encompasses comprehensive reforms in healthcare,” the statement read.
Recently, Governor Yahaya disclosed plans to construct an additional 114 Primary Healthcare Centres, one in each ward of the state. This initiative aims to consolidate his administration’s achievements and ensure that every resident—regardless of location—has access to essential health services.
