Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has donated an 18-seater bus to the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Niger State Council, as part of his administration’s efforts to support pensioners in the state.
The NUP has expressed its gratitude to Governor Bago for his commitment to addressing pensioners’ welfare. The union commended the governor for allocating funds to settle outstanding gratuities and addressing the 7.5% entitlement.
During a recent meeting, the State Secretary of NUP, Comrade Abdullahi Baba Sani, highlighted the challenges faced by local government retirees, including stagnant payments and difficulties in accessing medical care. Governor Bago has directed the Director-General of the Pension Board to initiate continuity of gratuity payments.
The governor proposed quarterly discussions on pension issues and encouraged retirees to explore farming and animal husbandry under the state’s New Niger agricultural policy. He also presented the union with a trailer load each of rice and maize for distribution among pensioners.
The NUP has recognised Governor Bago as the “Pensioners’ Most Friendly Governor” and will honor him with a national award at their 12th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference on April 15, 2025.
