Gombe SEMA begins sensitisation tour to five flood-prone LGAs

Following the 2024 flood prediction by the Nigerian Metrological Agency (Nimet), in which 5 LGAs in Gombe State are said to be susceptible to a flood disaster, officials of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) have embarked on a sensitization campaign for the affected LGAs.

The LGAs include Kwami, Dukku, Yalmatu-Deba, Gombe, and Funakaye.

The sensitization campaign by the officials of SEMA comes at the heels of an earlier training organised by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in conjunction with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) held on June 12, 2024.

To this end, the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), led by its Executive Secretary, Abdullahi Haruna Abdullahi Bakoza, embarked on an enlightenment tour to the flood-risk Local Government areas on Thursday.

During the course of the campaign, the Executive Secretary is expected to meet with critical stakeholders at the various local government areas, including council officials, traditional and religious leaders, members of civil society organisations, and representatives of disabled persons.

Issues bordering on flood prevention and mitigation are expected to top the agenda at the various meetings where the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Abdullahi Haruna Abdullahi, stresses the need for residents not to use water channels as refuse dump sites, among other agenda items.

He also commended the state governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, for placing a premium on the environment and giving the agency all the necessary support to succeed.

The team visited Kwami and Funakaye Local Governments and will also visit Dukku, Gombe and Yamaltu Deba in its subsequent engagement, as contained in a statement by Joshua Danmallam.
