Gombe: PDP Chieftain praises journalists for strengthening democracy

… as NUJ clocks 70

A Chieftain of the main opposition Gombe State People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former governorship aspirant in Gombe State, Alhaji Hamma Saleh, has congratulated the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on its 70th anniversary, praising Journalists for the vital role they are playing in strengthening democracy and good governance in Nigeria.

In a press release made available to Journalists in Gombe on Sunday, Hamma Saleh acknowledged the significant contributions of Journalists in exposing corruption, enlightening the public on government policies, programmes and projects, and orienting citizens on matters of national interest.

He commended the NUJ for its dedication to promoting a free and responsible press, emphasising the importance of a vibrant media landscape in holding those in power accountable and promoting transparency and accountability.

According to him, “As the NUJ celebrates this milestone anniversary, I commend journalists’ hard work and commitment to truth-seeking. I also acknowledge the critical role they play in shaping the country’s future.” 

He stressed that, “I urge journalists to continue sustaining professionalism and ethical conduct in their reporting. It is also crucial for them to remain vigilant and courageous in the face of adversity, ensuring that the truth is always told and the public’s interest is protected.”

Hamma Saleh added that, “By doing so, they will not only uphold the noble principles of journalism but also contribute to a more informed and enlightened society.”
