Gombe governor sets up committee to assess tertiary institutions

Not fewer than 11 members assessment committee has been set up by the Gombe State Government to assess the relevance and viability of the five Tertiary educational institutions owned and funded by the state government.

The constitution of the committee was contained in a  statement signed and issued to newsmen in Gombe by the  Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Media and Publicity, Ismaila Uba Misilli stating that the committee is to be headed by Professor Buba Bajoga.

The statement gave names of the other members of the committee to include Senator Haruna Garba, Prof. Rufa’i Ahmed-Alkali, Prof. Sani Abba-Aliyu, Dr. Gidado Bello-Kumo, Senator Sa’idu Umar-Kumo, Prof. Istifanus Williams and Professor Nabath Tanglang.

Others are Professor Nana Tanko, Dr. Japhet Koni and Barr. Robert Wabida who is to serve as the  Secretary of the committee.

The committee according to the statement “is to review the level of establishment of the institutions from inception to date, assess the potentials and relevance or otherwise of the institutions to the educational development of the state”.

Also to “Assess their viability vis-a-vis the financial status of the state, especially in view of the Local Government Areas’ financial autonomy and the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit ( NFIU) regulations and Make such order or further recommendations as the committee may deem fit under the circumstances”.

“The committee may conduct public hearings or seek and receive memoranda from the public where necessary. It may also co-opt any other person to assist in the discharge of its assignment”, the statement added.

The committee will be formally inaugurated on Wednesday.

The five tertiary institutions owned and funded by the state government are the University of Science and Technology, Kumo; College of Education, Billiri; State Polytechnic, Bajoga; College of Legal and Islamic Studies, Nafada and School of Nursing, Dukku.

Meanwhile, determined to address the perennial water scarcity bedeviling some parts of the State capital and its environs, Gombe State Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya has ordered the immediate release of the sum of N110 million to the State Water Board with a matching order for immediate action.

The areas to benefit from the Governor’s immediate intervention are Wuro-Juli, Tabra, Nayinawa, Kanoyel among others which have suffered untold hardship before the assumption of office of Governor Inuwa Yahaya on May 29th, 2019.

A release signed and made available to newsmen by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ismaila Uba Misilli contained that the Governor has also directed for the immediate commencement of pipe works to convey water from the upper zone reservoir to Wuro-Juli, Tabra and Nayinawa quarters and ensure adequate water distribution to the residents of the affected areas which is estimated to cost the sum of  over N88 million.

According to the statement, the Governor also directed the task force on the water supply to undertake water reticulation works in some areas of the of Federal Low-cost Gombe, Government Girls Secondary School, Doma, and its environs, Kanoyel as well as communities along the waterline which will cost the sum of N21 million.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya had on his first official engagement assignment after assuming office, took a tour of the State Water Board and the Dadin-Kowa Treatment Plant and thereafter inaugurated a task force on water supply under the chairmanship of Engineer Abubakar Bappa following an outcry by residents of most parts of the State capital on the scarcity of water.

According to the Governor, during an interview, he will leave no stone unturned to ensure that pipe bone water returns to taps in the houses of residents of Gombe and other parts of the State.

Apart from tackling the water scarcity, the task force committee was also inaugurated to boost supply in the metropolis as well as other areas that had not been linked with water before now.
