Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has emphasised that his administration has zero tolerance for corruption and incompetence, maintaining that his focus is on delivering results to the people of the state.
The Governor made the declaration while performing the swearing-in of 17 newly appointed Commissioners held at the new Banquet Hall of the Government House, Gombe, on Thursday.
Also sworn in were the Head of Civil Service, Alhaji Ahmed Kasimu Abdullahi, and 12 newly appointed Permanent Secretaries, urging them to uphold the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
Inuwa outlined his vision for the state, which is centred around improving infrastructure, boosting agriculture, promoting education, and enhancing healthcare delivery, urging cabinet members to support him in achieving the goal.
He said, “I would like to remind you that your appointments go along with important responsibilities. You are entrusted with the task of serving the people of Gombe State with integrity, transparency, and accountability.”
“The decisions you make will have a direct impact on the lives of our citizens, and I have every confidence that you will approach your roles with a great sense of duty and the highest ethical standards,” he added.
According to him, “Let me also remind you that our administration has zero tolerance for corruption and incompetence.
As members of the Executive Council and as leaders in the civil service, you are expected to be diligent in your duties and prudent in the management of the scarce resources to be placed at your disposal.”
“You must be ready to put the collective interest of Gombe State at the forefront of every decision you make. As a servant of the people, your objective should always be about the progress of our dear state and the welfare of its people,” the Governor warned.
He added that his administration has, in the past 4 years, introduced various reforms as part of efforts to transform the civil service and place it on a path to achieve greater efficiency and improved service delivery.
“This includes the establishment of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms to reposition the civil service. We also settled over N7.9 billion in gratuity obligations inherited from the previous administration, ensured the timely payment of pensions, and implemented the new minimum wage at the state level since February 2020,” the governor stated.
He reminded the new State Executive Council members that engagement with relevant stakeholders in running governance is crucial for the successful implementation of the institutional developmental agenda.
The Governor described the posts of Commissioners and Permanent Secretaries as two important positions that are crucial for the successful implementation of the development agenda for the state.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya noted that the State Executive Council, which comprises the Governor, Deputy Governor, and commissioners, plays a vital role in formulating policies, implementing programmes, and ensuring the translation of the administration’s vision into tangible results for the people.
He stressed that, “In the same vein, Permanent Secretaries are the fulcrum that forms the backbone of the Civil Service as they come in providing administrative expertise in executing government programmes and the continuity that is needed for effective and efficient governance.”
He also said, “The decisions you make will have a direct impact on the lives of our citizens, and I have every confidence that you will approach your roles with a great sense of duty and the highest ethical standards.”
Earlier in an address of welcome, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, described the swearing-in of members of the State Executive Council, the Head of Civil Service, and 12 Permanent Secretaries as a clear testament to the Governor’s position as a political icon whose footsteps are worthy to be followed by men and women of goodwill in the State.
He noted that the reappointment of some members of the State Executive Council justified their hard work, dedication, and commitment to duty, which ultimately impacted the incredible performance of Governor Inuwa Yahaya in the last four years.
In his vote of thanks on behalf of the newly sworn-in Commissioners, Barrister Zubair Muhammad Umar thanked the governor for finding them worthy to serve the state, assuring of their total commitment to service, dedication, and loyalty.
“We pledge and give you our word that we know your vision, we know your aspirations, and we know where you want to take Gombe State, and inshallah Allah, we will go with you, we will accompany you, and we will serve you with all honesty, loyalty, and dedication”, he affirmed.
