Gombe farmers to cultivate 6,000 hectares of land during dry season

Gombe State Government has said 6,000 hectares of land will be cultivated by farmers in the Stateduring the 2019/2020 irrigation farming in the dry season.

Mijinyawa Yahaya, the Commissioner of Water Resources, made this known in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria in Gombe on Thursday.

He said that 4,000 hectares would be cultivated at Balanga Dam, while 2,000 hectares would spread across nine local government areas of the state.

According to him, it is only Gombe Local Government Area, LGA that is yet to establish its irrigation site out of the existing 11 LGAs.

“Apart from Gombe LGA, we were able to establish three irrigation sites in each of the LGAs of the state,” he said.

Yahaya said as soon as they were able to finish the necessary arrangements, those involved in the irrigation farming would start cultivation.

“We are going to effectively utilise Balanga Dam for the benefit of Gombe people and economic improvement of the state,” he said.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Mohammed Gettado, told NAN that the State government had concluded plans to provide farmers with fertiliser, seedlings and other farm inputs at subsidised rates in anticipation of the dry season farming.
