UNLESS God-conscious Muslims change their apolitical attitude, Nigeria may continue to suffer from bad governance, a lecturer at the University of Lagos, Dr Tajudeen Yusuf, has said.

Yusuf stated this at a pre-Ramadan lecture organised by the Oyo State chapters of the Organisation of Tadhamunul-Muslimeen (OTM) and The Muslim Congress (TMC).

Speaking on the topic, “Muslims and Nation Building,” the Associate Professor lamented the dormancy of conscious Muslims in partisan politics and governance which he noted was responsible for their “second citizen” status in the country.

Dr Yusuf, who asserted that Prophet Muhammad lived as a great political leader and exemplary human rights activist, said no fewer than 21 chapters of the Holy Qur’an discuss governance.

He, therefore, wondered where many Muslims find evidence for their apolitical stance.

The renowned public speaker urged Muslims to wake up to their divine role of governance following the injunctions of their Lord Who warn them not to leave their affairs in the hands of the uninformed and less intelligent.

He also encouraged them to take advantage of their numerical strength in attaining political power for the nation to be rescued from the “mess it is wallowing in at the hands of unscrupulous politicians.”

Earlier in his lecture, the Operations Manager of Hajj Maqbul Travel and Tours, Sheikh Sa’eed Orankan, called on Muslims around the world to prepare adequately for Ramadan and strive towards making the best of the blessed month.

Sheikh Orankan listed congregational prayer, alms giving, Qur’an reading, seclusion (I’tikaaf) during the last 10 days of the month and performing lesser hajj (umrah) as part of the beneficial acts Muslims could engage in during Ramadan.

The Chief Imam of Fountain University, Osogbo, Sheikh Sirajudeen Bakrin, warned Muslims against time wasters like social media, television among other “frivolities” while fasting.
