Give us water, Sokoto residents appeal to Tambuwal

Residents of Sokoto town has appealed to the state Governor, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal to urgently solve scarcity of water in Sokoto town and it’s an immediate environment which they claimed has reached a crescendo level, especially with the recent weather in the state.

A visit round Sokoto town shows that the people of the state are passing through serious agony due to the skeletal supply of water to the town by the Sokoto state Water Board.

Speaking with our correspondent in the state, Mr Suleiman, a resident of the town decried the level of water supply in the state which he described as abnormal.

According to him, “Imagine a Jerry can of twenty-five litres of water which we normally buy at the rate of twenty-five naira now go for between fifty and sixty naira.

“I can tell you that even with your sixty naira, you will still have to appeal to the water vendors popularly called “meruwa” to get it to buy.

“As you see me here, I have been sitting down here for close to three hours looking for water to buy.

“It is not as if we don’t have the pump in my house, we have and even pays monthly but for some time now, it has not been running.

“We started noticing this few weeks before the general election, but we were thinking once the election is over, everything will be normal.

“I must confess, we are gradually losing faith in the state government, here is a man we just gave our votes and instead of enjoyment, it is suffering we can get.

“I am appealing to the Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and the state Commissioner for water resources, Honourable Umar Bature, to help us solve this water problem as quickly as possible” he pleaded.

When Tribune Online visited places like Bello way, Emir Yahaya, Koko Road, Aguwanrogo, Gagi, Manna and many other areas, scores of water vendors were seeing looking for water to make more money.

An investigation conducted by our correspondent, however, revealed that the only source of water available for now in town is Solar power boreholes.

One of the water vendors who speaks with  our correspondent also lamented that the few solar power boreholes available in the town cannot solve the problem of water scarcity.

Efforts to speak with the management of the Water Board was not successful, as the phone number of the public relations officer was not reachable as at the time of filing this report.
