The girl child took centre stage at the recently concluded Youth Empowerment Foundation (YEF) stakeholders meeting held at the University of Ibadan Centre for Sustainable Development, Bodija.
At the meeting, the previous year’s scoresheet was read- achievements and challenges were recognised, and participants were unanimous in their agreement that more could be done to better the lot of the girl child in society.
YEF urged parents to put more effort towards the upbringing and education of girls, in order to secure their future.
YEF is a non-profit organization partnering with Standard Chartered Bank to improve the knowledge, behavior, and skills of young people in sexual reproductive health, HIV awareness and prevention, as well as in personal and team leadership.
On her part, the representative of Oyo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Mrs Ronke Akinyemi emphasised the need to train the girl child and suggested having role models speak to the girls in schools, as this has a lasting impact on them.
Mrs Akinyemi commended YEF for their contribution to the younger generation, stating that no nation can develop without the contributions of the girl child in their developmental path.
The Vice Principal of Our Lady of Apostles, Mrs Omotunde B. C., suggested creating opportunities for girls to interact with, challenge and motivate one another to achieve their best.
YEF Ibadan’s Program Officer, Ms Bukola Akingbohungbe, mentioned that the organization is continually striving to serve better and is focusing on increasing awareness, knowledge, and participation in activities such as sports, gender-based violence, and reproductive health education amongst others.
