Gillian Baci: New face of Nigerian pop music

Published by

A truly global artist, Gilbert Bassey, otherwise known by his stage name ‘Gillian Baci’ is emerging to be the new face of pop music in Nigeria. Having worked with producers and artists from all over the world, collaborating across a wide range of genres, from EDM to reggae to Afrobeats, he is proof of a performer with musical and cultural diversity.

The Calabar-born Nigerian pop artist, writer, and filmmaker was raised in Abuja and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Madonna University.

Having graduated top of his class at the pioneer edition of the Multichoice Talent Factory and going on to successfully write three novels, he also grooms aspiring writers through his story-teaching initiative, Learn Storycraft, and has also directed a couple of short films, one of which is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime. Gillian Baci can be said to be a man of many talents and a master of all.

Gillian isn’t new to the music scene as he has been recording since 2012 and had his official debut release in 2017.

Gillian Baci makes music with emotional and philosophical depth. He’s adept at creating catchy melodies and writing lyrics that speak to the soul. An attestation to his musical and cultural diversity is his single ‘Feel at Home’ which was produced by an Argentine producer and mixed and mastered by a Chilean sound engineer.

He also has experience making music for film, having composed over 10 original songs for films and TV shows.

His musical identity revolves around finding self, love and heartbreak, serenity, the resilience of the human spirit, and universal unity. His strongest belief is that we are all one (plants, animals, air, everything), and to that end, he seeks to only spread positivity with his music, even when singing dark lyrics.

He’s currently working on the release of his first Extended Playlist entitled: ‘Sweet Serenity’, a music compilation focused on spreading the philosophy of finding serenity over happiness.

‘Sweet Serenity’ seeks to spread good vibes in an age where many people are dealing with depression and other mental health issues. Gillian used to suffer from depression and so this EP is, in a way, a culmination of his long journey out of the dark abyss of depression. Sweet Serenity will be released on 28th April.
