Geography Olympiad for secondary school begins

THE Regional Geography Olympiad, an annual secondary school Geography competition that pre-qualifies for the international Geography Olympiad for 2017 has commenced.

The programme is organized by the Association of Nigerian Geographers and it will hold in the six geopolitical zones of the country.

The annual event would bring secondary school students between the ages of 16 and 19 across the country to showcase their knowledge and skills in Geography education.

The Regional Geography Olympiad is a pre-qualification exercise for the National Geography Olympiad and winners will represent Nigeria at the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) on August 2, 2017 in Belgrade, capita of Serbia.

The very best from all over the world are chosen from thousands of students who participate enthusiastically in the Geography Olympiads to represent their countries.

This competition consists of three parts: a written, a multimedia and substantial fieldwork requiring observation, leading to cartographic representation and geographical analysis and the aim is to stimulate active interest in geography and the environment among young people

The competition will be held at the University of Maiduguri for the North-East zone on February 20; University of Abuja for the North-Central zone on March 2; University of Science and Technology, Kano, for the North-West zone on February 22; Niger Delta University for the South-South zone on February 24; and the University of Ibadan for the South-West zone on February 28.

The National Geography Olympiad will be held at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, during the annual conference of the Association of Nigerian Geographers on March.
