Fumes from a generating set have left a 29-year-old nursing mother identified as Tawa and her five-month-old baby dead in Owo, headquarters of Owo Local Government Area of Ondo state.
The woman’s husband is also in a coma at the Intensive Care Unit, ICU, of the Federal Medical Centre, Owo.
A family source said the couple, staffers of the Federal Medical Centre in Owo, bought the generating set on Monday and put it on before going to bed on Thursday evening.
According to the source, a sister of the late woman who noticed her absence from the office on Friday morning visited their home after calling her repeatedly without any response.
He explained that the sister became worried because the deceased and her husband who called her the previous evening, telling her that the baby was sick did not report to the office.
He said the sister rushed to their home after waiting till 1 pm, only to meet the family in a critical condition, attributing the death to the smoke inhaled from the generator.
It was reliably gathered that the doors leading to the house were forced open while the couple were found unconscious on the bed while the baby had died.
They were rushed to the FMC but the wife later gave up while the husband was still lying unconscious on the hospital bed
Efforts to speak with the management of the hospital or the relations of the deceased were not successful while those at the hospital declined to comment on the incident.
