GBV: We’ll ensure protection of gender rights — Zamfara govt

Zamfara State Government has reiterated its commitment to the protection of the gender rights of all residents in the state.

This was revealed by the permanent secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Habibu Yalwa at the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) coordination meeting held at the Ministry’s Hall in Gusau, the state capital.

According to him, the State Government through the Gender Affairs Department of the Ministry will continue to collaborate with development partners to support the State GBV technical working group in accomplishing its desired objectives.

In a keynote address, Dr Audu Alayende of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) commended the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal for its immense contribution to Gender-Based activities in the state and assured of their continued support.

Earlier on, the Director of Planning Research & Statistics, Ministry for Women Affairs and Social Development, Sadiya Shehu Kaura, explained that the Ministry has a fully equipped situation room for GBV data collation and analysis for efficient reporting of violence against persons.

“This was aimed at having quality, harmonised, disaggregated data that inform evidence-based laws, policies, programmes and interventions that better respond to specific context and reliability of gender rights,” she disclosed.

Also Speaking, state coordinator of the Association of Orphans & Vulnerable Children (AONN), Dr Ahmad Hashim said the government needs to collate information related to all stakeholders that provide protection, security and shelter for women, children, and other vulnerable, adding that a template was already available to ease facilitate the project.

During the meeting, many presentations were made on the rights of women and gender-based Issues in the state.
