The Olugbede of Gbede Land in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Oba Colonel Engr. Olusegun Oloruntoba (rtd), has announced ongoing efforts toward the construction of a befitting palace for the Olugbede of Gbede Kingdom.
Speaking during the 2025 Gbede Day celebration—an annual event commemorating the unity and cultural heritage of the district—the monarch recalled his pledge during his coronation on 11th June 2022, to ensure the Kingdom had a dignified royal residence.
“I am glad to inform you all that work has commenced already,” he said, expressing hope for the palace’s swift completion.
Oba Oloruntoba extended special appreciation to Hon. James Abiodun Faleke for his commitment to securing funding for the palace project.
He also acknowledged the professional contributions of Major General Funsho Owonibi and Architect Salman Idris, who volunteered their expertise for the palace design.
He further thanked the sons, daughters, and friends of Gbede land who have contributed to the project, encouraging others yet to support the cause to do so.
The monarch also paid tribute to local hunters, vigilante members, and security personnel for their relentless efforts in safeguarding lives and property in the community.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Ijumu Local Government, Alhaji Haruna Ibrahim, announced that Hon. Faleke had taken over full responsibility for the palace construction, commending him for the gesture.

Delivering a presentation titled “Importance of Culture: Gbede Kingdom in Focus,” Mr Ayenibe, former Director General of Protocol to the Kogi State Governor, emphasised the crucial role of culture in promoting peace and societal development, urging Gbede people to protect and preserve their traditions.
Also speaking, the National President of Gbede Development Union, Chief Israel Oshafunmi, congratulated indigenes on the occasion, underscoring the values of hard work and integrity which define Gbede identity. He lauded the rich and enduring nature of Gbede culture, calling for its global promotion.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Planning and Organising Committee and Olu of Iyah Gbede, Oba Faleke Tayo David, urged the community to cherish and preserve the Gbede language, noting that the event was designed to foster unity and reaffirm cultural pride.
