Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State commiserates with the families of Abba Lawan Kurmawa, a veteran journalist, who passed away early Tuesday morning.
Abba Lawan who died at Nasarawa Hospital, Kano and left behind an indelible mark in media practice in the state and beyond, was until his a member of the Correspondent Chapel of NUJ in Sokoto.
In a statement signed by Abba Anwar, chief press secretary to the governor on Tuesday, Ganduje lamented that, “This death is a great loss to all of us. It is a loss to the journalism profession, it is a loss to the state and indeed to his families, both immediate and extended.
“The death, according to the governor, was shocking to all lengths. Adding that, “Abba Lawan Kurmawa can best be described as a humane, disciplined, humble, down-to-earth, people-oriented, righteous and great patriotic citizen, during his lifetime.
“It is with painful feeling and increasing hope for his reposed soul, that I am extending the heartfelt condolences of the state government and the good people of Kano state, to his immediate families, Triumph Newspapers family, his friends and well-wishers,” he said.
He prayed that, “May Almighty Allah forgive all his shortcomings and reward his good deeds. May Allah give his families and all of us, the fortitude to bear this great loss.”
In a related development, the Correspondent Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists in Sokoto State has also commiserated with the families, friends and relatives of the deceased.
A statement signed by Secretary of the chapel, Ankeli Emmanuel, described the deceased as an elder and a respectable veteran colleague, and the immediate past chairman of the Correspondent Chapel who introduced tremendous positive changes.
“As chairman of the Chapel, the late Abba gave his very best, by not just being a father, but he also passionately and transparently carried everybody along.
“The late Abba’s grasp and analysis of affairs are legendary, just as his legacies of passion, love, humanness, dedication and belief in the strength of the media as a unifier rather than agents of division is something that will ever remain fresh in the minds of all his professional colleagues”.
The statement however prayed that the Almighty Allah give his family, and all his friends the fortitude to bear the loss, we prayed Allah to grant his gentle soul.
