Gambari’s legacy continues to shape Nigeria’s foreign policy — Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to Professor Ibrahim Gambari, describing his contributions as foundational to Nigeria’s foreign policy and global diplomatic standing.

Tinubu made the remark during a family reception held in Abuja to celebrate the 80th birthday of the former Chief of Staff to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari and iconic diplomat.

Highlighting Gambari’s illustrious career, Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, noted that the professor’s work with four UN Secretaries-General and seven Nigerian heads of government underscored his unique role in navigating Nigeria’s diplomatic landscape across military and civilian administrations.

Tinubu praised Gambari’s efforts as Chairman of the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid, his leadership in initiating the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), and his mediation in the Darfur peacekeeping mission as exemplary contributions to global peace and governance.

“Prof. Gambari’s legacy is deeply intertwined with the evolution of modern Nigeria. His dedication, expertise, and passion for diplomacy have left an indelible mark on our country’s relationships with the global community. His work continues to influence how we engage the world today,” Tinubu said.

The President lauded Gambari’s role in shaping post-apartheid Africa and his pivotal contributions to fostering democracy and national development.

Referring to him as an “accidental diplomat” with a natural gift for resolving crises, Tinubu emphasized that Gambari’s calming presence in high-stakes negotiations exemplifies his enduring influence.

Addressing the distinguished guests at the event, Tinubu reiterated that Gambari’s life work remains a source of inspiration for generations of diplomats and public servants.

He added, “Your legacy continues to guide our nation’s foreign policy and serves as a beacon for future leaders.”

Tinubu wished Gambari good health and fulfilment in the years ahead, acknowledging his unwavering commitment to serving Nigeria and the world.
