THE chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima, has appealed to the state governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje to assist the commission through provision of funds which would aid sports development in the state.
Galadima, noted that the commission is faced with critical challenges such as funding, slow progression of inherited sports contracts and lack of a befitting office complex.
He made the assertion during the presentation of trophies and awards won by Kano Pillars Basketball team, Kano Pillars Para-Soccer team, as well as individual and corporate awards won by some players and the state government, to Ganduje at the Government House, Kano.
Galadima noted that involvement of the private sector in sports “would allow companies and organisations to capitalise on the popularity and devotion many fans feel towards their favourite teams and athletes”.
He stated that the commission is doing its best to take sports to the grassroots in the state to fish out talented but obscure sportsmen, even as it is making concerted efforts to attain enviable positions in all major games in the forthcoming 19th National Sports Festival.
The former president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Galadima disclosed that Kano State government has customised some of its teams under the brand name ‘Kano Pillars’ to pave the way for more community participation in sports development.
The customized teams according to Galadima are Kano Pillars Taekwondo team, Kano Pillars Para-soccer team, Kano Pillars Basketball team, Kano Pillars Judo team and Kano Pillars Football Club.
Meanwhile, Ganduje in his remarks promised that the problems bedeviling the state Sports Commission would be duly attended to.
He charged the sports commission to continue to scout for talents who would be motivated to exploit their full potential and take Kano State to greater heights in sports in the country.
