FUTA students protest as one dies, three injured in auto crash

Students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), on Tuesday, took to the street to protest the death of a 200 level student of the institution, Daniel Akinyele, who died from injuries sustained in an auto accident on Monday night.

Akinyele and three others were said to have been involved in a crash around the Cathedral area of Akure, around 10 pm on Monday night and rushed to a hospital.

It was however gathered that Akinyele who sustained a serious injury was referred to Federal Medical Centre, Owo but his friends rushed him to the University health facility in the school where he was pronounced dead.

The students, however, converged on the Akure /Ilesha road on Tuesday morning, protesting his death, barricading the road, hindering vehicular movement for several hours.

The students also prevent people from entering and coming out of the campus lamenting that the death of the student was avoidable and laid the blame at the doorsteps of the institution’s management.

Some of the students who spoke with our reporter explained that if the security guards at the gate had allowed the victim to be rushed in on time and promptly attended to, at the FUTA health centre, the deceased might survive the auto crash.

The National President of the Ondo State Students Association, Mr Ayoade Kikiowo, attributed the death to the negligence of the FUTA management board.

Meanwhile, the management of the institution has expressed sadness over the death of the student but said the 200 level student was brought to the University Health Centre clinically dead, describing the death as unfortunate and regrettable.

In a statement signed by the school’s Registrar, Mr Richard Arifalo, the school said: “from available information, the deceased student along with others were involved in an accident outside the campus around 10 PM on August 2, 2021.

“They were first taken to a private hospital where doctors battled to save their lives. Three of the students were stabilised but Daniel’s condition remained critical. When the condition of the student deteriorated the doctor at the Private Hospital referred him to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo for expert intervention.

“At that time the parents of the student and some relations had joined him at the Private Hospital and it was decided, because of the time factor, to bring him to the University Health Centre.

The deceased student was brought to the University Health Centre at 3.20 am and the doctor on duty promptly attended to the student in the care of the parents.

According to him, “all resuscitative efforts proved abortive; there was no cardiac activity and response to any stimuli. And by 3.40 AM he was declared to be brought in clinically dead”

Arifalo also said “the doctor offered to take the boy to the morgue with the University Ambulance but the parents declined electing to take him home ostensibly for burial.

“The medical report from the Private Hospital which was brought along with him indicates that the student was clinically non-responsive by 1.30m before they got to the University Health Centre at 3.20 am. The University has ordered an immediate review of the incident in order to ascertain the circumstances leading to it.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased student. The University is also monitoring the state of treatment of the other students who were also involved. We pray that the Almighty God will grant the family and friends of the deceased the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

In a related development, two persons lost their lives while several others were injured in an accident which involved a petrol tanker and many motorcycles in Ondo town, headquarters of Ondo West Local Government Area of the state.

At least four people were said to sustain a serious injury that happened around the Sabo Lipakala area of the town on Monday night during heavy rain that lasted about 30 minutes.

According to an eye witness, the driver of the lorry lost control and rammed into oncoming motorcycles resulting in multiple accidents.

He said the corpse of those who died in the accident had been deposited at the morgue University of Medical Sciences in Ondo, while those injured are still receiving treatment at the intensive care of the hospital.
