A source who witnessed the indifferent explained that Agboola, a 500 level Applied Geophysics student, was immediately rushed to a private hospital where he was subsequently referred to the State General Hospital.
He said the young man was rushed to the private clinic because the
institution’s Health Center had been shut down for months, following the strike embarked upon by the Non-Academic Staff Unions of the University (NASU)
He said Agboola was taken to the State Specialist Hospital from the private clinic due to lack of basic oxygen facilities to revive him but said the student was confirmed dead at the hospital.
He, however, said no one could confirm the health status of the deceased before the unfortunate incident but said he was healthy and active before he slumped and died.
Some students of the institution under the auspices of the Nigerian Association of Earth and Mineral of Science Students (NAEMSS) described the development as sad and condemned the insensitivity of the management of the institution to the welfare of the students
They described the non-functioning health center in the school community as embarrassing
The Students Union President, Adeyinka Olasehinde described the incident as sad, saying the Union would be meeting the management of the school to express their displeasure over the school position and attitude towards the student’s welfare.
He disclosed that the remains of the deceased has been handed over to his brother who took his remains to Ado Ekiti in Ekiti state.
Speaking in the death of the student, the Public Relations Officer of the school, Mr. Adebanjo Adegbenro said “the management of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), is saddened by the demise of one of its students Tunji Agboola who slumped and died while playing football with colleagues at his off-campus residence in Akure.
“Our prayers are with the family at this very difficult time. The University commiserates with his immediate family and friends and prays God to grant them the fortitude to bear this painful loss. This is a time of sober reflection.
“As an institution, we will continue to review and strengthen existing structures in terms of health care delivery and other services that directly affect the well-being and welfare of members of the FUTA community particularly the students who remain our main focus.”
