The Governing Council of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has suspended the process of appointing a new vice-chancellor (VC) for the institution following a series of petitions by the critical stakeholders.
The tenure of the current vice-chancellor, Professor Kayode Soromekun will end in February 2021.
The process commenced in August with the final shortlisting of about nine professors for the position but the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had raised alarm over alleged moves to impose the current deputy vice chancellor of the university, Professor Abayomi Fasina.
The Coordinator of ASUU Akure zone, Professor Olufayo Olu-Olu said the process, if not suspended, would not produce a qualified applicant to emerge as the vice-chancellor.
In a statement on Thursday, the Deputy Director, Corporate Services of the institutions, Mr Adeyinka Ademuyiwa, he revealed that the decision to suspend the selection process was in view of the over 120 petitions received from stakeholders over the process leading to the appointment of a new vice-chancellor.
He added that the decision was taken after the council’s meeting presided over by the Chairman, Governing Council, Dr Mohammed Lawan Yahuza on Wednesday, promising that the council would be committed to a free and transparent process that will produce qualified individual to move the citadel of learning to a greater height.
According to him, “this is to accommodate grievances and complaints of some stakeholders in the cancelled processes where over 120 petitions had been received. A new process will commence shortly.
“In a session presided over by Council Chairman, Dr Mohammed Lawan Yahuza on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, where all members were in attendance including officials of the National Universities Commission (NUC) members agreed to temporarily halt the ongoing process and thanked NUC officials for their support and encouragement.
“FUOYE Governing Council remains committed to credible, transparent, fair and just processes and is open to suggestions and corrections that will help deliver on this onerous assignment.”
While commending the NUC and other stakeholders for their unflinching support for the university, Ademuyiwa explained that a new process would soon commence.
“Both Dr Yahuza and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Kayode Soremekun wish to appreciate the diligence, steadfastness, commitment and patriotism of Council Members, friends of FUOYE particularly NUC officials and those of the federal ministry of education for their unalloyed support in this critical moment.
“Since FUOYE is handling the processes of appointing the Vice-Chancellor for the first time, human errors are bound to occur in what is essentially a learning process. The good thing is that FUOYE team is ever ready to correct such errors and deliver acceptable appointment processes,” he added.
