Former president of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Musa Liman Kwande has advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to as a matter of urgency abolish the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) or make it free for candidates.
He also urged the president to make the West African Examination Council (WAEC), National Examination Council (NECO) and other related examinations free for students in government secondary schools as part of efforts to cushion the suffering of the masses caused by the removal of fuel subsidy.
Kwande gave the advice in an interview with Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday in Lafia while reacting to Monday’s national broadcast by President Tinubu, saying the speech was not a replica of what Nigerians were going through.
He noted that what the president said in the broadcast was not the immediate problem of Nigerians and the solution to the remover of fuel subsidy. Adding that the major issues disturbing the common man are WAEC, NECO and JAMB registrations.
While insisting that JAMB should be abolished or made a once-in-a-lifetime examination and made free by the government, Liman said for now, it remains the major and immediate challenge of poor Nigerians.
“If I can advise, Mr president should abolish JAMB completely or if he cannot abolish it, he should make it free. He should also make WAEC and NECO in government secondary schools free because in the educational sector that is the immediate problem of a common man.
“For example, the last time two million students took JAMB and only five hundred thousand of them passed. Averagely, if you calculate, everyone of them paid N5000 fee, N2 million will give you N10 billion. Eighty per cent of the people registering for JAMB are from poor backgrounds. But if he cannot abolish JAMB, he should make it a once-in-a-lifetime examination as long as you pass. WAEC and NECO should also be made free”, Kwande advised.
Kwande, who is the Baraden-generalissimo of Lafia, further advised the president to put the country’s refineries in good shape for Nigeria to be refining her crude oil with Dangote refinery on the other hand to complement the existing ones.
Kwande concluded that “Government should provide social services. What the people want in this country is free education and free medical services at all levels. The security of Nigerians should also be guaranteed, the government should also provide farm imputes for her farmers to encourage farming. If these services are free, I’m sure the common man will be at peace,” Kwande concluded.
