What’s not to love about fruit kebabs? They are delicious, children-friendly, nutritious, easy to make, attractive with vibrant colours, fun activity for the kids, source of fresh fruit, and they contain all your favourite fruits all in one stick!
They are ideal dessert, appetizer or snack for both regular meal times and formal occasions like weddings. What better way to treat your guests to a healthy platter than fresh fruits in a handy stick?
All you need are your favourite fruits, skewers and a bit of creativity.
If using wooden or bamboo skewers, make sure all the splinters are off of them by rolling two together in your hands, or rubbing them over each other, as if you are sharpening a knife.
Not all fruits are equally suited to use on kebab. For example, bananas and apples are kid-friendly but prone to rapid browning. You could however dip them in a bowl of apple juice or diluted lemon juice to slow the process and to preserve their pale beauty until the time of service. Citrus fruits can be a bit difficult to work with as their membranes are too fragile. Pawpaws, watermelons, strawberries, pineapples, grapes, cucumbers and other fruits in such categories are a great choice.
Get creative with the shape of fruits. Cookie cutters in any shape would work just fine.
There are a variety of choices in achieving a visually appealing outcome. You can choose fruits of the same colour, one type of fruit, one shape or a mix and match of colours, fruits and shapes. Before you start assembling the fruits, just take a moment to mentally combine their flavours, textures and colours.
So, are you having a kids’ party, adult get-together or just looking for a healthy family snack, ditch the salad bowls, get the fruits out and stick them on a stick.
