FRSC tasks road users on safety standards to reduce burden of crashes

MOTORISTS and other road users have been advised to always adhere strictly to Safety Standards to minimise accidents on the highways.

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps Dr Boboye Oyeyemi gave the advice yesterday at the Anglican Church of the Pentecost Awka, the Anambra state capital during a church service to mark the 2018 African Road Safety Day and World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims.

Dr Oyeyemi who spoke through the State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr Sunday Michael Ajayi regretted that over Seventy-five per cent of road traffic crashes were caused by human factors and called on every road user to be safety conscious.

The Corps Marshal while commending the church for its support to the Corps, noted that Road Safety is a collective responsibility, urging the priests to continue the good work by incorporating teachings on safety consciousness in their sermons.
In a remark, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Road Infrastructure, Furniture and Maintenance Mr Emeka Ohuoha while sympathising with people lost their relations to road traffic crashes, reassured of State Governments commitment to ensuring adequate road network which he said will play a vital role in the fight against road traffic crashes.

Contributing the Commandant of Anambra State Traffic Management Agency Mr Umezinwa Chidi, called for total compliance of road users to road safety measures to help reduce the road traffic crashes within the State, assuring that the Agency will do its best in ensuring the safety of the road users.

Earlier in a sermon, the Curate of the Anglican Church of the Pentecost Awka, Reverend Echezona Obioha called on Christians to be law-abiding, obey traffic rules and prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives as a result of road accidents.

According to the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics, no fewer than Two thousand Five Hundred and Ninety-eight Nigerians died in road traffic crashes between October 2017 and March 2018 signalling a  reduction in the number of deaths by road accidents.
