Friendship, Relationship in the era of political division: To end or not to end?

Sandra Nwaokolo

Politics has always been a touchy subject and it’s even worse these days. It’s no surprise that people end friendships or relationships over political differences. Nigeria’s political climate is extra complicated, so the question of whether you should end a friendship or relationship because of politics is a big deal.

The main issue is whether political beliefs should matter that much in personal relationships. Some people think it’s vital to have friends who share their political beliefs, but others think that shared experiences and values outside of politics are more important.

It’s tough to give a one-size-fits-all answer since it’s a personal decision. Some people might think their political beliefs are so important they can’t be around anyone who doesn’t agree with them. Others might feel they can still be friends with people who have different political views.

It’s important to remember that politics isn’t the only thing that determines whether a relationship is strong. Communication, respect, and understanding are key to any healthy relationship, regardless of political beliefs. If you do decide to end a friendship or relationship over politics, it’s important to do it in a respectful way and consider how it might affect the other person.

In Nigeria, politics is a huge deal and tensions are high. The country is split along ethnic, religious, and regional lines, which can make it even harder to maintain personal relationships. However, it is possible to have respectful and meaningful conversations about politics without letting it ruin friendships.

The bottom line is that it’s up to you whether you want to end a friendship or relationship over politics. Just make sure you approach the issue with empathy and respect for the other person’s beliefs and values. That way, you can build stronger relationships, even in the midst of political chaos.
