A contractor, Ismaila Lasisi, has approached Oja Oba/Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking to divorce his wife, Yetunde Lasisi.
‘’My wife has no regard for me. She doesn’t hesitate to slap me anytime we have a misunderstanding. She’s also diabolical and is trying all she could to snuff life out of me. Her frequent beating is jeopardizing my health, please separate us, “he told the court.
The defendant did not admit to divorce giving the welfare of their children as her reason.
Ismaila further explained his reason for wanting a divorce.
“While other women work hard to make their marriage work, all my wife does is to make our marriage a hell on earth.
“I have never met anyone as troublesome as my wife. I work hard to provide for her and our children, but she’s never pleased or satisfied with whatever I do. She finds fault in everything and anything I do.
“Sometimes, I come home late due to the nature of my job and instead of being received with warmth, my wife give me the cold shoulder.
“She will complain and turn every argument into a fight. I have gone to bed on many occasions with an empty stomach because she failed to prepare my dinner.
“There was a day she provoked me so much that I beat her and she fainted. It took the help of our neighbours to revive her. I vowed never to hit her again after that incident.
“She now capitalises on this and doesn’t hesitate to slap me at the slightest provocation, “he said in court.
“There was a time my photograph which was hung in the sitting room got missing. Nobody could explain what happened to it. I looked for it everywhere in the house but couldn’t find it. I later found it in my wife’s bag when I was searching for a key to one of the rooms.
“I was shocked because the picture was tied to some fetish objects. I asked her about it, but she didn’t give me any reasonable explanation. It then dawned on me that she wanted me dead at all cost.
“I informed our family members about it, but they were unable to settle the rift between us because she has no regard or respect for them, “he added.
“I’m fed up with my wife and our marriage, I want a permanent break from her, “the plaintiff told the court.
“I don’t agree to my husband’s plea for divorce, “the defendant told the court.
“I want to stay married to him not because he’s loving and caring, but due to the love I have for our children.
“He comes home late every night and is not bothered how the children and I fared during the day.
“If I agree to his prayer of divorce as a result of his irresponsibly acts, who will take care of my children?, “Yetunde asked in court.
“My lord I’m prepared to bear my cross if only for the sake of my children.
“All he has said are lies to get rid of me and he will not succeed.”
The court president, Chief Ademola Odunade, having listened to both parties, observed that their marriage had broken down irretrievable.
He, therefore, ruled that their marriage be dissolved.
The custody of the children was awarded to the defendant while the plaintiff was ordered to pay N9,000 monthly as the children’s feeding allowance.
He was further asked to rent a one-room apartment for the defendant because of the children for a period of one year.
The children’s education and healthcare were stated as the defendant’s responsibility.
