As part of its commitment to poverty alleviation and economic empowerment services to Nigerians, the Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO), under its LAPO Outstanding Women Leadership Award (LOWLA), has honoured four women Nigerian following their outstanding performances in their different fields of endeavour.

The awardees who were drawn from four categories (lifetime achievement award, professional, business, farming) are Mrs Elizabeth Ehigiamusoe, Mrs Helen Azuni Matthias, Chinyere Gladys Okoro and Mrs Jackson Durodola Mary.

Three of the awardees except Mrs Ehigiamusoe were given a cash prize of N300,00 each by the LAPO.

Recall that LOWLA is an annual event organised by LAPO in commemoration of International Women’s Day held every March 8.

Speaking at the 11th anniversary of LOWLA, tagged “Embracing Equity: Issues and Way Forward”, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of LAPO Group, Dr Godwin Ehigiamusoe, sued for the equitable distribution of resources for women in the society.

He opined that one-third of women globally had experienced a form of violence from their spouse and an estimated 130 women were killed by their partners or a family member every day.

Ehigiamusoe stated that Gender -biased deprivations and male-dominated social structures are prevalent in society.

“Over 25 years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action; progress towards equal rights for women remains elusive across countries.

“If we fail to challenge gender stereotypes, call out discriminations, draw attention to biases, and seek out inclusion, we may not be able to achieve the desired progress including the SDGs.

“The celebration of the anniversary of the LAPO Outstanding Women Leadership Award is a testimony of the strength of our conviction in women’s empowerment and contributions to societal advancement”, he said

He revealed that LOWLA was instituted in 2013 to recognise and honour women who are excelling in business, farming and professional careers with sustainable social impact.

On his part, the Chairman of, the Board of Directors, LAPO, Dr Osaren Omokpae, said the awardees through sheer determination, hard work and uncommon commitment surmounted obstacles to attain success in their various human endeavours.

He disclosed that the 2023 award winners would bring the total number of awardees to 37 women since LOWLA was instituted.

The Guest Speaker, Prof. Adefunke Adekunle, Director of Gender Studies at, the University of Benin, remarked that gender equity would be achieved by giving everyone a voice to speak as well as listened to, just as she posited that society would become
prosperous if collective efforts are given to women and women-led businesses to function at their fullest potential.

Also, the Chairperson, Prof. Stella Chiemeke, Vice Chancellor, University of Delta, Agbor, advocated for women’s liberation from poverty and debased lives and called for sound moral, education and entrepreneurial training for the girl child to reduce the numbers of women living debased lives in the society.
