Four reasons wigs are a must-have for every woman

Published by

Angela Amaka Nnamezie, the Chief Executive Officer of Casa Angeles Signature, Gbagada, Lagos State, has over 11 years experience in hairstyling and wig making. In this piece, she says the reason wigs are making waves on the fashion scene is because many women have discovered all the possibilities wigs have to offer.

A wig is a head covering made from human hair, animal hair or synthetic fibre. Though some people wear wigs to disguise baldness, it can also be used as a less intrusive and less expensive alternative to medical therapies for restoring hair or for religious reasons.

According to history, the ancient Egyptians created wig to shield shaved and hairless heads from the sun. They also wore wigs on top of their hair using beeswax and resin to keep the wigs in place. Wealthy Egyptians used to wear elaborate wigs and scented cones of animal fat on top of their wigs.  Other ancient cultures such as the Assyrians, Phoenicians, Jews in ancient Israel, Greeks and Romans, also used wigs as an everyday fashion.

Wigs are either made by machines or hands. Machine-made wigs are wigs made from wefts of hair that are sewn on by machine, while custom/ handmade wigs are made to your particular specifications. The wig maker will use any combination of hair fibre, cap, style or colour to get you exactly what you want in a wig that looks and feels like you.

Types of hair used in wig making are; human hair, animal hair and synthetic fibre

Some women choose animal hair/ synthetic wigs because they look and feel good, need very little attention and care, and cost much less. Animal hair cost between N25, 000 to N50000 naira or more depending on the hair quality while synthetic fibre goes between N5, 000 naira to N10, 000 naira or more. Human hair are much more expensive  and can cost between N90,000 to N150,000.

Below are some of the reasons women wear wigs:

Medical hair loss / thinning hair

Hair loss, whether it is a temporary or permanent can be a very traumatic experience for anyone, especially for women. The loss of a woman’s hair goes a lot further than “vanity.” Dealing with hair loss can be emotionally draining and could lead to loss of self- confidence. Wearing a wig or hairpiece does more than camouflage hair loss it can help you feel like yourself again.

Confidence

When a woman looks in the mirror, most of the time, it’s all about her hair. If her hair looks good, all is good. When a woman feels good about her hair, it gives her a major boost of confidence, which can often last the whole day.

Change

One of the advantages of wearing wigs is the ease of change and the versatility of the styles. There are lots of styles and colours to choose from. Changing looks has never been so easy, from long blonde with highlights to a short tapered coif. Wigs are therefore an easy way to achieve the look you want whenever you it!

Time and affordability

Who doesn’t love that fresh out of the salon feeling of a fantastic hairdo? Unfortunately that feeling can hit the pocket book pretty hard, not to mention the countless hours you can spend in the salon achieving your desired look. Synthetic wigs come pre-styled allowing you to get your desired result immediately and in some cases at a fraction of the cost of a trip to the salon.  Simply pop on your wig and you are good to go! No more bad hair days to contend with!
