A wig is a head covering made from human hair, animal hair or synthetic fibre. Though some people wear wigs to disguise baldness, it can also be used as a less intrusive and less expensive alternative to medical therapies for restoring hair or for religious reasons.
According to history, the ancient Egyptians created wig to shield shaved and hairless heads from the sun. They also wore wigs on top of their hair using beeswax and resin to keep the wigs in place. Wealthy Egyptians used to wear elaborate wigs and scented cones of animal fat on top of their wigs. Other ancient cultures such as the Assyrians, Phoenicians, Jews in ancient Israel, Greeks and Romans, also used wigs as an everyday fashion.
Wigs are either made by machines or hands. Machine-made wigs are wigs made from wefts of hair that are sewn on by machine, while custom/ handmade wigs are made to your particular specifications. The wig maker will use any combination of hair fibre, cap, style or colour to get you exactly what you want in a wig that looks and feels like you.
Types of hair used in wig making are; human hair, animal hair and synthetic fibre
Some women choose animal hair/ synthetic wigs because they look and feel good, need very little attention and care, and cost much less. Animal hair cost between N25, 000 to N50000 naira or more depending on the hair quality while synthetic fibre goes between N5, 000 naira to N10, 000 naira or more. Human hair are much more expensive and can cost between N90,000 to N150,000.
