Four policemen, two others killed at checkpoint in Enugu

Confusion broke out on Wednesday evening in Obeagu Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area, when yet to be identified gunmen opened fire on police operatives at a checkpoint.

Four policemen and two other persons were reportedly shot dead as the gunmen attacked the checkpoint in Obeagu-Amechi community in Enugu South Local Government Area.

It was also gathered that some residents and passers-by were reportedly wounded by stray bullets in the crossfire.

According to eyewitnesses, the attack which started at about 5:30 p.m. at a busy spot at the Mmiri Ocha Amodu Bridge area was said to have lasted till 7:00 p.m.

Meanwhile the remains of the four policemen and two others had been deposited at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla mortuary.

Meanwhile, the police issued a statement on the incident through its Public Relations Officer (PRO), Dan Ndukwe.

“Information surrounding the shooting incidents in the evening hours of today, 21/07/2021, where police operatives were allegedly attacked by yet-to-be identified gunmen at checkpoints in Obeagu-Amechi in Enugu South LGA and Amagunze in Nkanu East LGA are still sketchy,” Ndukwe said.

He added that preliminary investigations had commenced, assuring that further development would be communicated.
