Four killed as cultists resume hostility in Ogun

Published by

Four persons have reportedly been killed as rival cult groups resumed hostilities in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The Nigerian Tribune learned that several people were injured in the clash that occurred in different parts of the town.

The warring groups were the Eiye and Buccaneer confraternities.

Our correspondent learned that the clash started last Thursday when a leader of the Eiye cult group, identified as Dare, popularly known as Oloba, was shot dead in front of his house in the Ijeja area of Abeokuta by individuals suspected to be members of the Buccaneer.

In retaliation, another suspected cultist, Tayo Alora, was murdered in the Isabo area of the town on Sunday morning. He was reported to have been gunned down by his assailants, said a source.

“They must have trailed him here, but they really didn’t engage in any disagreement or fight before he was shot. This is really scary; the government should quickly rise up to this before things get out of hand again.

“This is how they always start; the police and other security agencies should please start their work immediately,” said the source.

The incident was confirmed to newsmen by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Ogun State Police Command, SP Omolola Odutola.

The PPRO also stated that a member of the Aiye and Buccaneer were killed over the weekend.

She explained that one Seun Elewode, a member of the Aiye cult group, was killed during a shootout in the Adeun area of Lafenwa, Abeokuta, while another suspected member of the Buccaneer confraternity was killed in the Akin Olugbade area of the town.

“One Seun Elewode, a notorious member of the Aiye cult group who just returned from prison, was attacked and shot dead at Adeun, Lafenwa in Abeokuta.

The PPRO added, “He was shot dead during a shootout at their hideout in a cool spot during a birthday party.

“On February 4, around 10:45 pm in Oshungboye crescent in Akinolugbade, a suspected cultist was shot dead, while another was shot in the chest.”

In the meantime, 11 suspects were said to have been arrested in connection with the killings.

Those arrested, according to Odutola, were Oluga Abiola, Olamilekan Abiodun, Olarenwaju Michael, Jimoh Okewole, and Wasiu Tolulope. Others are Abiodun Adeyemi, Muiz Adeyemi, Adebowale Saheed, Adebowale Ayoola, David Oviem, and Adebowale Olayori.
