Four dead, property destroyed as flood ravages Abuja mega estate

Trademore Mega-City Estate in Lugbe area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, was thrown into confusion and agony in the early hours of Monday as raging floods killed four people, destroying property worth billions of naira in the process.

According to residents of the estate, flooding has become a perennial problem to the area, defying all solutions.

When Tribune contacted National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) one of their staff volunteered the information that “We have been working here since morning, we have taken four dead bodies to the mortuary and others that are injured to the hospital for treatment.”

A resident of the estate Mr Maxwell told Nigerian Tribune that “we have been having floods here but this is the most dangerous one, you this bridge here, it is more like a canal, when it rains the whole water in Abuja passes through here, and once it can’t contain it, it spills into the residential area causing the floods.

Another resident of the estate Mrs Uzoama told Tribune that “Last year after the floods, the government came, marked houses in the front roll of the estate for demolition but they didn’t anything about it till now, the government must come and help us here so that this thing won’t repeat itself again.”

The floods have destroyed houses and have taken other properties like cars and other valuables to an unknown destination, when Tribune Online visited, residents were crying over the death of loved ones, while others were gathering their properties together.
