Foundation takes breast cancer awareness campaign to Ogun community

A non-government organisation, Penuel Wellness Foundation (PWF), has taken its breast cancer awareness campaign programme to the Ibafo community in Ogun State, where it enlightened some women and young girls about the disease, treatment, and precautions against it.

Speaking at the one-day event with less privileged and vulnerable beneficiaries, the Executive Director of the foundation, Mrs Yinka Olayinka, said the outreach is designed to promote prompt access to health care and easy detection of some life-threatening illnesses, particularly breast cancer, among women.

She lamented the rising cases of breast cancer and the high morbidity and mortality from the disease in the country, attributing the development largely to late detection, diagnosis, and wrong treatment of the disease.

While urging governments across levels in the country to give deserved attention to primary health institutions by ensuring they build well-equipped and functional primary health centres in various communities, she said there is a great need for the country to take precautions against breast cancer and other life-threatening diseases common among women.

She said if the capacity of primary health centres, for example, were strengthened, it would go a long way in reducing the number of cancer cases and deaths associated with the disease across the country.

On the awareness campaign, which involves free medical checks and drug dispensing, she said the exercise was part of her organisation’s activities to commemorate the 2023 Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

She argued that the exercise would greatly contribute to the actualization of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 3 on good health and well-being.

Giving a talk at the event, Dr Ibukun Obabade, a health expert, stressed the need for women to check their breasts regularly and reduce their high intake of carbonated foods.

She also told participants to always go for regular checks for diabetes and elevated blood pressure, which could cause hypertension.

According to her, a regular breast examination, for example, will go a long way in detecting the presence of a lump in the breast and the right treatment if such a lump is cancerous.

She, however, pointed out that medical checks on some women at the programme revealed lumps in their breasts, while others are diabetics, and they were all advised to seek help at any healthcare facility around them.
