Foundation provides N5.5 million educational grants to 69 Cross River students

In an effort to combat illiteracy, the Abasi-Abasi Educational Support Foundation, a non-profit organization, has made its first grant distribution by supporting 69 students.

This includes 28 secondary school students receiving N50,000 each and 41 tertiary students awarded N100,000 each.

The foundation has assured that these funds, disbursed immediately via bank transfers, are not merely a one-time contribution but a pledge of ongoing support to help students overcome financial obstacles throughout their academic journeys.

At the event, the foundation’s founder, Hon. Bassey Effiong Bassey, who serves as a legislator for the Akpabuyo state constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly, highlighted that the foundation aims to assist underprivileged students eager to pursue education but hindered by financial constraints.

This initiative is part of Hon. Bassey’s larger commitment to education, which includes renovating classrooms, providing water access, and enhancing educational facilities in Akpabuyo and nearby areas in Bakassi LGA.

The Chairman of the event , Hon. Dr. Patrick Ene Okon praised the founder for his vision and community-focused leadership, remarking that this initiative is both daring and commendable. He emphasized that Hon. Bassey’s investment in education will leave a significant and enduring impact, encouraging recipients to fully embrace the opportunities afforded to them.

Mr. Michael Ita, the Foundation’s Coordinator, shared that the beneficiaries were chosen through a thorough and equitable selection process. Three students from each of Akpabuyo’s 10 wards, as well as three communities from Bakassi LGA—Ikang South, Ikang Central, and Ikang North—were selected based on their financial need. All recipients are local residents currently enrolled in accredited secondary or tertiary institutions.

Dignitaries who expressed support for this initiative included Etubom Architect Eyo Ndem, Pastor (Barr.) RoseMary Archibong, Prof. Francisca Bassey, Vice Chancellor of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Dr. Bong Duke, Vice Chairman of the State Planning Commission, Mrs. Ann Esessien, the State Auditor General, and Mr. Mike Nsan, Director General of the Southern Homeland Security, among others.
