The Global Peace Foundation Nigeria (GPFN) has expressed its deep concern over the tragic killing of 16 travelers in Uromi, Edo State.
It stated that this disturbing incident highlights the urgent need to reinforce societal values, uphold the rule of law, and foster peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians.
In a statement issued by the Country Director, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, and made available to journalists in Kaduna over the weekend, the organization noted that as an entity committed to the vision of One Family under God, GPFN reiterates the importance of unity and mutual respect across all ethnic and religious divides.
“Every Nigerian, irrespective of background, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Acts of violence and jungle justice not only erode the moral fabric of our society but also hinder national progress and stability.
“We commend the swift response of security agencies in apprehending suspects linked to this incident. However, we urge the government and law enforcement authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial investigation to uncover the facts and ensure justice is served in strict adherence to the rule of law.”
Furthermore, GPFN called on the government to urgently address the lingering insecurity that has turned every Nigerian into a suspect, fueling unnecessary fear and distrust among citizens.

“The failure to decisively tackle insecurity has contributed to the rise in mob actions and jungle justice, which threaten the nation’s social cohesion and legal order.
“The growing climate of fear and suspicion underscores the need for comprehensive security sector reforms. We implore the government, civil society organizations, and community leaders to collaborate in restoring public confidence in the justice system and implementing proactive security measures.”
GPFN also urged Nigerians to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. Instead, citizens should report suspicious activities to appropriate authorities and engage in constructive dialogue to resolve disputes peacefully.
“Public awareness campaigns should be intensified to educate people on the perils of mob justice and the importance of tolerance and understanding.”
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the collective responsibility we all share in fostering a culture of peace, justice, and respect for human dignity. GPFN remains committed to working with all stakeholders to build a nation where unity and peace prevail.
