Foreign affairs minister, Nnamani, others, escape death as thugs disrupt congress in Enugu

THE Enugu State Congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC), ended abruptly on Saturday as thugs stormed the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, the venue of the election and chased party stakeholders and delegates away with dangerous weapons.

Prominent members of the party, including the Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama,  former Senate President, Chief Ken Nnamani, ex-Governor of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime, national vice chairman of the party, Mr. Emma Eneukwu, the Director General of the Voice of Nigeria, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, the State’s party chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, a party chieftain, Emperor Baewood Ibe and other members ran for their lives when the violence erupted.

The violence, which erupted in the middle of the election shortly after the Foreign Affairs Minister arrived was trailed with sporadic gunshots by security operatives.

Nigerian Tribune observed that the two warring groups in the party led by the Minister and the founding chairman of the party, Dr Nwonye, respectively, had stormed the venue as early as 8 am and poised for a showdown.

Unlike the local government and ward congresses, which the groups held at different venues, it was a different thing this time as they both stormed the stadium early morning with their supporters.

As of the time of filing this report, the camp loyal to Onyeama returned to the same venue to hold their parallel congress.
