For Nurudeen Makinde, the pains, anguish and sleeplessness linger

Published by

Resigned himself to a make-shift wheelchair, Nurudeen, 46, is writing from the bruises of a fateful road accident along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on 31 July 2016.

Trained as a bricklayer, Nurudeen set out for a hopeful outing along with one of his sons, Abdulrasheed, 15, but fate had a different course for them. A truck crashed into the pair at the Olorunsogo end of the Expressway and bang, Nurudeen only regained consciousness at the University College Hospital (UCH). His son, little Abdulrasheed was unlucky. He died instantly from the impact of the accident.

Left with such emotional and physical wreck, Nurudeen took his case to Nigerian Tribune and subsequently got mercies from well-meaning citizens.

In his first interview published by Nigerian Tribune of 13 October 2017, Makinde related of his numerous attempts to get therapy from respected institutions like the UCH and the National Orthopaedic Hospital Igbobi, Lagos as well as his plans to be flown to China for advanced diagnosis and therapy at Beijing Puhua International Hospital, where he was told a sum of N5.7 m would be enough to get him walking again.

‘Many thanks to Nigerian Tribune, I got assuring words and cash donations from Nigerians,’’ Makinde explains.

Following a SOS on the Tribune medium, I received an alert of one thousand naira (N1,000) on  13 October 2017 by 6.30 pm. Same day, another donor sent  two thousand naira (N2,000) at 9.24 pm. On October 14, another good Samaritan sent the sum of seventy-one thousand naira (N71,000) to me at exactly 9.42 pm. I was overwhelmed by the hospitality of Nigerians,  that they could within two days, rallied round me with a total sum of seventy four thousand naira (N74,000) was soothing to me.

However, Makinde said since the 14 October 2017 donation, no other help had come from any quarters.

‘’I further appeal to Nigerians to help me to overcome the pains and recover my life. I have not been sleeping and I daily suffer pains unabated. I urinate and excrete on the same spot. I have been a big burden on my family members and volunteer caregivers. It has been a terrible experience I do not wish for any human being . The pain is killing but I trust in God that I will survive this and hope that well-meaning  Nigerians will be able to help me fulfill this hope.
