The Jigawa State government has procured 200 trailers of NPK fertiliser to be sold at a subsidised price to farmers during the rainy season.
The chairman of the subsidized fertilizer distribution committee, Senator Mustapha Makama Kiyawa, discussed this during a press briefing following the inauguration of the committee by Governor Malam Umar Namadi at the Government House in Dutse.
Senator Mustapha Makama Kiyawa explained that the state government has acquired 200 trailers of NPK fertilizer, which contains 120,000 bags, to be sold to farmers at a 50% subsidy.
He also mentioned that the fertilizer has already arrived in the state and is currently stored in various locations across the state for easy access by the farmers.
The chief of staff to the governor stated that the fertilizer will be sold at a price of N16,000 per bag, and the sales will commence on Monday, the 17th of this month, at designated centres throughout the state.
Senator Kiyawa further disclosed that the Jigawa State government places great importance on supporting the agricultural sector, which serves as the backbone of the state’s economy.
He emphasised that the removal of fuel subsidies is a necessary step towards economic stability, and the government aims to ensure that farmers receive the necessary support during this transition.
He stated, “Fertilizer is essential for enhancing crop yields and ensuring food security. It will be made available to farmers at a significantly reduced cost.
It is expected to be sold to farmers at the price of 16,000 Naira per bag, which is considerably lower than the prevailing market price.”
“This subsidised rate aims to make fertilizer affordable and accessible to as many farmers as possible, particularly those who may have been unable to afford it due to financial constraints.”
He further emphasised the committee’s role in facilitating the timely distribution of subsidized fertilizer, which will help mitigate the effects of the fuel subsidy removal.
The committee is committed to the welfare of farmers and aims to alleviate their financial burden by providing subsidized fertilizer. The goal is to empower farmers, increase agricultural output, and enhance food security in the state.
The committee will diligently procure the subsidized fertilizer, ensure proper storage, and oversee its equitable distribution across all local government areas of Jigawa State.
Close collaboration with agricultural agencies, cooperative societies, and other stakeholders will be maintained to ensure the efficient and transparent implementation of the distribution process.
