Fmr Kosovo President salutes Emir of Keffi over palace gender sensitivity

The former President of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga has applauded the Emir of Keffi, His Royal Highness, Dr Shehu-Usman Chindo, Yanmusa 111, for being gender sensitive in his palace.

She said the Emir demonstrated a lot of courage to allow women to play a role in the traditional palace, where before now was a preserve of the male gender.

She said the move should be taken and elevated to the nation’s political level, as a good example for women to play their role politically to advance nation-building.

Former President Jahjaga, led a delegation of the international working group (IWG) of Sustainable Advocacy for Gender Equality (SAGE) to the Emir of Keffi, on his invitation, to promote the place of a woman in Nigerian political development.

While welcoming the group, the Emir of Keffi, His Royal Highness, Dr Shehu-Usman Chindo, Yanmusa III, pointed out that the inability of some Nigerian men to distinguish between politics and culture was responsible for the seeming repressive move against the women.

He noted that the emirate has to demonstrate its status as a centre of learning which plays host to a university with centre for gender training.

“This is a centre of learning, we host a university that is housing a Centre that deals with Gender mainstreaming.

“Secondly it is an ancient city where our women are not left behind, they are also in the mainstream of the political class of this Country.

“As I told you, during the meeting we have many challenges the woman are facing, especially when it comes to the issue of finance, they are handicapped, when they have interest in contesting.

“I will like to draw the attention of the entire nation that culture and politics are two different things. We have always mistaken culture and politics. That is why most people turn against women when they are contesting. They are part of us and we have to carry them along,” he pointed out.

Princess Hajiya Billasa Lawal, who attested to the practical measures the emir has taken on women role in building the emirate said the “Emir has been a champion of gender equality and has organized us as women in Keffi to improve our lives.

“When we see women in positions like you, we get encouraged, we know we are able to do it if we are given the opportunity.

“It is a great thing that you have honoured us with your presence we hope that you will listen to us to improve our lives and the women here, Lawan said.
