The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abuja has celebrated its annual Patient Appreciation Day, to show appreciation to patients for their loyalty and trust in the hospital’s services.
The event which was held on the first working day of the year, aimed to show appreciation to patients for their loyalty and trust in the hospital’s services.
The hospital also used the occasion to give a token of gift to the baby of the year, born on January 1st, Baby Bello, to Mr and Mrs Bello at 5:25 am, weighing 3.9 kg.
This year’s event which was organized by the Department of Social Welfare in collaboration with the hospital’s management and the media is a tradition that began four years ago.
The FMC Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Bioku Muftau, explained that the event is an opportunity to give back to patients and take feedback from them.
“We use this opportunity to appreciate our patients for keeping faith with us throughout the year,” he said.
Dr. Muftau acknowledged that the hospital, like many others, faces the challenge of brain drain, as he assured that the hospital is taking steps to address this challenge. “We are going to bring in more staff to augment the existing ones,” he said.

The hospital’s management also expressed its commitment to continuing its excellent services, including open heart surgery, spine surgery, and laser surgery.
Additionally, the hospital plans to introduce new services, including kidney transplant and cardiac lab services.
Dr. Muftau stressed the importance of patient feedback and appreciation saying, “If patients don’t see anything good in us and we don’t give them quality service, they won’t keep faith with us.”
“As the hospital looks to the future, it is clear that patient-centered care will remain at the forefront of its mission.
“With plans to introduce new services and expand its facilities, FMC Abuja is poised to continue providing exceptional healthcare services to its patients.”
“The success of FMC Abuja’s Patient Appreciation Day celebration is a testament to the hospital’s commitment to building strong relationships with its patients.
“By showing appreciation for their loyalty and trust, the hospital is able to foster a sense of community and mutual respect that is essential for delivering high-quality patient care,” he said
Also speaking, the Head of Department, Medical Social Work, Erdoo Lorfa, noted that the hospital’s approach to patient care goes beyond diagnosis and treatment.
She added that the hospital look at the psychosocial needs of patients and ensure that they receive an all-round treatment.
According to her, the idea of Patient Appreciation Day was initiated by the hospital’s Medical Director, Prof Sa’ad Ahmed, who has been at the helm of the hospital for four years.
She said, “Since its inception, the event has become an annual tradition, where hospital staff visit patients and show appreciation for their trust and loyalty.
“The event also serves as an opportunity for the hospital to take feedback from patients and hear their views and reviews about the hospital and their treatment.
“This feedback is invaluable in helping the hospital to improve its services and provide better care to its patients.
“Another major highlight of the event is the celebration of the first baby of the year. This is a significant event that the hospital does not take lightly.
“The first baby of the year is always celebrated with great fanfare, and the hospital spares no effort in making the occasion special.”
She also disclosed that in addition to the Patient Appreciation Day and the celebration of the first baby of the year, the hospital also has an indigent fund that takes care of the needs of indigent patients.
“This fund is used to provide financial assistance to patients who cannot afford treatment.
“The hospital’s medical social work department plays a crucial role in providing support to patients, including navigation within the hospital, counseling, and financial assistance.
“The department is committed to ensuring that every patient receives the care and support they need, regardless of their financial situation.
“The hospital’s commitment to transparency and accountability is evident in its use of an electronic medical records (EMR) system.
“This system allows donors and benefactors to track their donations and see the impact of their support.
“The hospital is calling on the general public to support its efforts in providing care to indigent patients. Donations can be made through the hospital’s cash point, and receipts are provided for all donations.
“The hospital’s medical social work department is responsible for ensuring that all donations reach the intended beneficiaries.
“The department keeps detailed records of all donations and ensures that they are used transparently and accountably,” she added.
One of the patients, who is identified as Peace Emmanuel, while sharing her experience praised the hospital’s services, saying they were very great.
Peace who has been using the hospital since 2018, commended the nurses, doctors, and environment, stating that they provide adequate services with no regrets.
Another patient, Hafsat Bello, expressed her happiness at having the first baby of the year. She felt good and was grateful for the gift presented to her by the hospital.
Also, Oluwafemi Eternal rated the hospital’s services as 100 out of 100. He praised the doctors and nurses, saying they were “top-notch.”
Bashir Ado, a 70-year-old retired banker, also shared his positive experience at the hospital. He said he was referred to the hospital after complications from surgery and was impressed by the care he received.
Ado praised the hospital’s management and staff, saying they were kind and helped him regain his health. He expressed his gratitude and wished the hospital continued success.
The hospital distributed free sanitary towels, children toys, kitchen items for women, shoes, caps, and blankets to no fewer than 230 patients.
