Flooding: Edo begins desilting of drains, warns against indiscriminate disposal of refuse

Published by

Ahead of the rainy season, Edo State government has commenced the desilting of drainages on major streets in Benin City, the state capital and across the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Mr. Jonathan Lawani, who disclosed this in Benin City, warned residents against indiscriminate disposal of refuse to prevent blocking of drainages and avert flooding.

Lawani who spoke while monitoring the desilting of some major roads in Benin, noted that the desilting of drains and drainages must be done from time to time to allow for the flow of flood water to the right channel.

The commissioner charged that the flood and erosion challenges experienced in some parts of the city was due to the indiscriminate disposal of waste in unauthorised places by some people.

He urged residents to desist from dumping refuse in unauthorised places as the state government would prosecute anyone caught in the act in line with extant environmental laws.

“Residents, traders and shop owners must ensure prompt and proper desilting of drains in front of their houses and business premises. They should notify the ministry so that the silts can be evacuated on time,” Lawani said.

The commissioner further advised residents and corporate bodies in the state to collaborate with the state government to ensure that Edo is clean and healthy.
