The Councillor representing Awak ward in Kaltungo LGA of Gombe State, Jamilu Isa has confirmed that one person lost his life following the flood disaster to ravaged the Dogon Ruwa community in the area.
Speaking in a phone conversation with Tribune Online on Saturday, the Councillor confirmed that the flood was a result of heavy rainfall on Friday, 28th July 2023.
According to him, “The rain started at about 11.30 am on Friday and it lasted to about 2.30 pm resulting into a heavy flood that reached up to the waist of a man. It has never been like that before. It was a devastating situation.
“Many houses were destroyed, animals drowned while barns fell due to the flood a development that has put the residents in a dire situation of needing immediate aid.
“Immediately I received the sad news, I informed the council chairman who directed that I should get the desk officer of SEMA in the area for necessary official action. I have done that expecting something positive.
“The displaced people have been moved to the primary school in the community where they are staying for now pending the time officials of SEMA will take necessary action.
“I am very sure that by now, the Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya must have been informed and in not a distant time, he will give a directive on what is to be done.
“Over 50 households were displaced numbering more than 500 persons comprising mostly women and children. Some of them have gone back to stay with relatives whose houses were not badly affected. The situation is very pathetic and the people need immediate attention.”
