A heavy downpour which resulted into flooding has claimed one life and washed away houses, farmlands and other valuables worth millions of Naira in Dukku LGA of Gombe State.
Report have it that the flood disaster has rendered many families homeless and are now taking refuge in available public spaces across the local government area unsure of continuous means of livelihood.
Meanwhile, the State Governor, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has received briefings on the reported flood disaster that wreaked havoc on some communities at Malala and its environs in Dukku as well as others in Nafada local government areas as a result of over flow of River Gongola, following a heavy downpour.
The Governor, who expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of a woman who lost her life as a result of the flood, also symphatised with all those who lost their property and other material resources.
He has, therefore, directed the State Emergency Management Agency, (SEMA) and other relevant bodies to immediately move in and provide succour to the victims in order to cushion the effect of the disaster.
The Governor also asked the agency to immediately undertake an on the spot assessment of the level of devastation in the affected areas of Malala, Kunde, Gombe-Abba, Dukkuyel, Wuro-Tale, Hashidu, Lafiya, Jamari and Zaune in Dukku Local Government area as well as in Nafada and environs.
Inuwa Yahaya further assured of his administration’s commitment towards the wellbeing of the citizenry, adding that Government will offer assistance to minimize the suffering of the affected persons, just as he called on the National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA) to also come to the aid of the victims of the natural disaster.
He, however, urged the people to heed to flash flood warnings and avoid flood-prone areas as a preventive measure as contained in a statement signed by Ismaila Uba Misilli, Senior Special Assistant (Media and Publicity) to the Governor.
