Flight delays: FG set to introduce insurance coverage for passengers

Amidst the menace of flight delays and cancellations confronting Nigeria’s domestic scene, the minister of aviation and aerospace development, Mr Festus Keyamo has announced plans to introduce insurance coverage for passengers’ flights and potentially extending it to cover hotel accommodations, thereby prioritizing passengers’ safety and comfort.

This came just as he revealed his plans to embrace the model of accountability and transparency towards implementing a policy of name and shame for airlines that frequently cancel or delay flights, for the purpose of holding airlines accountable for their performance and ensure improved service delivery to passengers.

In an explosive interview with the Channels Television monitored by the Nigerian Tribune, the minister while highlighting several crucial policy issues he intended pursuing all aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s aviation sector, expressed commitment to providing WiFi services on local airlines, recognizing the importance of connectivity and modern amenities to enhance passenger satisfaction and overall travel experience.

He used the opportunity to speak on his insight towards revitalizing Nigeria’s aviation sector, focusing on enhancing safety, infrastructure development, cost-efficiency, passengers’ experience, and accountability.

These initiatives, if effectively implemented according to him have the potential to elevate Nigeria’s aviation industry to greater heights, fostering economic growth and global competitiveness

He unveiled his master plan for the development of five international airports, indicating a strategic vision to elevate Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure to international standards.

Keyamo used the opportunity to attribute reasons behind his recent decision to relocate the head office of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) back to Lagos the need to cut the cost of governance:

According to him, relocation of FAAN will save the government a whopping one billion naira through I initiating cost-saving measures by eliminating daily transport allowance (DTA) and airfare tickets for staff of the FAAN while shuttling between Abuja and Lagos airport.

In his resolve to enhance passengers’ experience, the minister on the occasion announced his commitment to providing WiFi services on local airlines, recognising the importance of connectivity and modern amenities to enhance passenger satisfaction and overall travel experience.

Other pressing issues the minister spoke on included: the importance of securing favourable agreements that safeguard Nigeria’s long-term interests in the aviation industry.
