A motorist, with a car marked Lagos EC 310 SMK, on Saturday, in Osogbo, capital of Osun State, who tried to escape arrest by traffic wardens, rammed into the new Orisunbare Market at MDS area in the town and crushed a 16-year-old girl.
Though the condition of the girl was uncertain at press time as she had gone into coma after the incident, men of the Osun State Ambulance Service, who rescued her rushed her to The Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, where she was purportedly rejected.
Sunday Tribune gathered that she was subsequently taken to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTHC), in Ile-Ife.
An eyewitness informed our correspondent that the driver, who ran away to avoid being mobbed also hit another car with registration number Lagos LND 186 BK from behind, which somersaulted.
The driver of the vehicle was said to be trying to escape from some policemen, after contravening the law at Ola-Iya junction by refusing to stop when the traffic light was on red.
A commercial motorcycle operator, who was at the scene of the incident said “The driver lost control, while trying to evade arrest, as the policemen chased him. He was on top speed because two policemen that were inside a Korope (mini commercial bus) chasing him.”
“That was why he hit another car, knocked down a girl and rammed into a shop in the market. The policemen that were chasing the car; one male and one female, disappeared immediately from the scene of the accident”.
However, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mrs Folasade Odoro in absolved the policemen at Ola-Iya junction of being the cause of the accident, saying they could not have chased the car because there was no vehicle attached to them, just she assured that the incident would be investigated.
