A group of armed robbers, on Tuesday afternoon, attacked a first generation bank in Ogbagi Akoko in Akoko North West local government area of Ondo state, killing five people during the raid.
According to an eye witness, the armed bandit who invaded the bank situated at Uko around noon gained entrance into the bank by using explosives to blow up the security door of the bank to gain entrance and the Automated Teller Machine (ATM)
He said the armed men shot sporadically into the air to scare away people while two of the bank security men were killed during the attack.
He explained that the armed men, numbering about 20, positioned themselves to different locations within the bank shooting at intervals to scare away the people or security operatives in the town.
He confirmed that three other people were killed in the bank while the hoodlums carted away a yet to be ascertained amount of money from the bank during operation which lasted for about 45 minutes.
The source however said the casualty would have been more if the town’s main market was opened but said, the robbers escaped through routes leading to Omuo- Ekiti in Ekiti state.
Confirming the attack, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Femi Joseph, described the attack as unfortunate but said only three people lost their lives in the attack including a police officer.
Joseph explained that the armed men numbering 15 arrived at the bank on motorcycles known as Okada, and went straight to blow off the ATM machine and the entrance door to gain assess into the bank.
The PPRO however said that his men have commenced investigation into the robbery and were on the trail of the hoodlums with a pledge to bring them to book.
Joseph however called on member of the public with useful information on how to track the armed men to help the state command of the police in arresting the armed robbers.
