Five facts your fingernails reveal about your health

Published by

Your fingernails do more than just add to your appearance—they can serve as a window into your overall health. Changes in color, texture, or shape might signal underlying conditions that need attention. Experts suggest paying close attention to these subtle clues, as they could indicate anything from vitamin deficiencies to more serious health concerns.

According to the BBC, here are five facts your fingernails may reveal about your well-being:

Pale or White Nails

If your nails appear unusually pale or white, it could indicate anemia, a condition caused by a lack of red blood cells. In some cases, it might also be linked to liver disease or malnutrition.

Yellow Nails

Thick, yellowish nails may point to a fungal infection. However, they can also be associated with respiratory diseases such as chronic bronchitis or conditions like diabetes.

Ridged or Grooved Nails

Vertical ridges are often a natural sign of aging, but deep horizontal grooves, known as Beau’s lines, may suggest illness, malnutrition, or a history of high fever due to infections like pneumonia.

Brittle or Cracked Nails

Frequent splitting or breaking of nails might indicate a thyroid disorder. Dry, weak nails are commonly linked to hypothyroidism, while nails that crack and are also yellowish could be due to a fungal infection.

Dark or Unusual Streaks

If you notice dark streaks or spots under your nails, it’s essential to have them checked by a doctor. In rare cases, this could be a sign of melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer.

Keeping an eye on your fingernails can help you spot potential health concerns early. If you notice persistent or unusual changes, consulting a medical professional is always advisable.
