Fittings on Second Niger Bridge vandalised

Some fittings installed on the newly second Niger bridge between Asaba in Delta and Onitsha, Anambra state have allegedly been vandalised.

According to Marins Oluwaseyi, representatives of the 2nd Niger Bridge Project from the Federal Ministry of Works, on Wednesday, the expansion joint walkway on axis 330 of the bridge had been stolen.

“It’s true. The stolen fitting is an element from the expansion joints of the bridge.

“The incident happened a week ago on the Onitsha side of the bridge. The expansion Joint at the median walkway of the bridge at Axis 330 on the Onitsha side of the bridge was stolen on the night of Wednesday 5th July 2023. Only one side was removed.”

The engineer said security personnel now patrol the bridge and surroundings to prevent further recurrence.

He, however, dismissed any risk for vehicles using the bridge as the expansion joints are intact on the carriageways, adding that plans are on to replace the vandalised items immediately.

Recall that former President Muhammadu Buhari recently commissioned the 1.6km bridge named after him without the access road on the Asaba.
