Fight against cholera: FG trains 500 women, youths in Kano

THE Minister of State for Environment Sharon Ikeazor has distributed certificates and starter packs and a sum of N10 million to 500 women and youths in the Kano senatorial zone who were trained on how to incorporate hygienic practices into their businesses.

Each of the beneficiaries also got a sum of N20,000 as a grant.

This was just as a former Kano State governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau who is now the senator representing Kano Central, said the gesture was aimed at building the capacity of Kano people on modalities of addressing the spread of communicable diseases.

The minister added that the gesture was part of the Federal Government’s commitment to provide the needed training for women engaged in small and medium businesses, especially in the food sector.

Also speaking, the minister who was represented by the Registrar and Chief Executive of the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON), Dr Baba Yakubu Mohammed, said the aim of the training was to build the capacity of food vendors in Kano State on good hygienic measures needed to address the spread of communicable diseases in the state.

He said the identified food vendors include bean cake sellers, tea sellers and other related small scale businesses to address the challenge of selling contaminated food to the people.

He said, “The vehicle for cholera transmission is through contaminated food. So the essence of the training is to build the capacity of these identified food vendors because these people play a major role in bringing food to the table of an ordinary citizen in Kano.

“So with this training and support, the spread of communicable diseases would highly be reduced “

The minister disclosed that the starter kits distributed to the trained women and youths were in line with the Federal Ministry of Environment’s bid to reduce the use of firewood and thereby reduce the emission of carbon dioxide into the air to address the challenges of climate change.
